How to Design Better Short-Answer Questions

Define answer scope, marks, alternatives, reference answers, and compact rubrics for clearer short-answer assessment.

Short-answer questions are useful when students must recall, explain, calculate, or apply an idea without choosing from supplied options. Their simplicity can hide ambiguity: students need a clear scope, and graders need a shared definition of sufficient evidence.

Match the question to the outcome

Use a short answer when the outcome can be shown in a focused response. ‘Define’ suits precise knowledge; ‘explain’ requires a relationship or mechanism; ‘apply’ needs a scenario. Sustained argument or synthesis usually needs a long-answer format.

  • Choose a command verb that signals the thinking required.
  • Supply the context needed to answer.
  • Avoid several hidden questions in one sentence.

Signal scope with marks and wording

Marks should be achievable through identifiable evidence. ‘Explain two effects’ is clearer than ‘Discuss the effects’ for a four-mark response. If an example is required, say so. A suggested length may guide scope but cannot replace a clear task.

Write a reference answer with alternatives

A reference answer should contain essential ideas and record equivalent terminology. It is an anchor for judgment, not a script students must reproduce word for word.

Build a compact rubric

For the sample, award one mark for prevention of indefinite circulation, one for decrementing at each router, and one for discard at zero. These criteria recognise partial understanding while preserving the total.

  • Do not add writing-quality marks unless writing is assessed.
  • Decide how contradictions affect correct statements.
  • Specify whether an example can substitute for explanation.

Prevent avoidable ambiguity

Define unfamiliar abbreviations, include necessary diagrams, and specify versions or conventions when they change the answer. Check that pronouns have a clear referent and calculation data are present and legible.

  1. Answer the final student-facing question.
  2. Compare your answer with the rubric.
  3. Ask another educator for alternate interpretations.
  4. Revise the prompt instead of expanding a scheme around accidental ambiguity.

Review after use

If many students make the same unexpected interpretation, inspect wording before concluding the cohort shares a misconception. Retain anonymised examples of valid, partial, and insufficient evidence for moderation, subject to institutional data rules.

  • Record accepted alternative wording.
  • Flag criteria graders interpreted differently.
  • Update the question and rubric together.
